It’s cold outside but Lumen Detroit is keeping patrons warm with six heated igloos on the restaurant’s patio—one of the largest in downtown Detroit. The cozy dining areas, which have stylish PVC exteriors, are set to remain at least until mid-March.

Each igloo features blankets, a view of Beacon Park and its own unique décor, such as Tiki and camping-themed touches.

“They are in very high demand,” said Lumen Detroit General Manager and Executive Chef Gabby Milton. “They are communal or shared with other dining parties. It’s kind of fun because you get to meet people in the community.”

The family-friendly seating areas, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, represent a growing trend nationwide. Known for being highly mobile and weatherproof, similar igloos have popped up at eateries, cafés and hotels from Bay City to major cities like New York.

In addition to the igloos, the New American eatery revealed a new lunch menu. The selections, which debuted in November 2018, include wine, “tons of beer,” appetizers, salads and plates such as pretzels, a Farmer's Market Bowl and the Croque Monsieur, “a fancy grilled cheese” made with toasted sourdough, Black Forest Ham, bechamel sauce and gruyere.

“The pretzels are huge for kids and families,” Milton said. Other popular options, she said, include the house-made salmon burger, served on Brioche bread with caper aioli, and Lumen’s delicious take on the Maurice Salad, which features turkey, swiss, dressing and fresh veggies.

The 4,000-square-foot New American restaurant at 1903 Grand River Avenue began serving dinner last spring. In addition to an expansive beer and wine menu, the eatery offers a beautiful rooftop view. Milton said the kitchen will begin serving brunch later this year.

Lumen Detroit is open Tuesday-Thursday from 3-11 p.m., Friday and Saturday 11:30 a.m.-midnight and on Sunday from 11:30 a.m.- 9 p.m. Follow the restaurant on Instagram at @lumen_detroit.
